Ordering pastries for a Richmond party, office or event

Count two medialunas a head for a breakfast where the pastry is the point, and one a head where it is one item among several. Medialunas are Argentine breakfast pastries, smaller than croissants, so they are counted in pairs and ordered by the dozen.

How many medialunas per guest?

a dozen serves about 4 people

Use that as the base, then adjust for the occasion:

  • Office breakfast, pastries as the main thing — two a head, plus two or three spare per dozen ordered.
  • Office breakfast alongside fruit and yoghurt — one a head is usually right.
  • Baby shower or birthday morning — two a head, and lean towards the filled ones.
  • Wedding welcome box — two per box, one plain and one filled.
  • School or team event — one a head, and expect the plain ones to go first with children.

The most common mistake is ordering for the headcount on the invitation rather than the headcount that turns up hungry. If you are between two sizes, take the larger one — medialunas keep to the next morning and nobody has ever been annoyed by the spare box.

How much notice does a large order need?

More than a normal box, and the honest answer is to ask. Everything is baked to order in one weekly batch with a fixed capacity, so a large order is not a matter of baking faster — it is a matter of how much of a batch is still unsold.

Thursday 11:59pm

For an event of any size, get in touch before you rely on the date. That is a two-minute conversation and it removes the only real risk in the whole thing.

What travels well, and what does not

Plain medialunas travel best. They are sturdy, they stack, and they are still good several hours after they are collected. Filled ones are fine for the same morning but are happiest eaten the day they are baked, and dulce de leche softens in a warm car.

For anything being carried across town, keep the boxes flat and out of the sun, and do not stack more than two high. Nothing needs refrigerating, and refrigerating them would make them worse.

Setting them out

They are finger food and need no cutlery, no plates and no warming. Put them out whole; halving them dries them out and makes twelve look like six. Coffee is the pairing that matters — medialunas were built for it.

What it costs

$13.50–$45.00

Every size and price is written as text on the catering page and on each product, so you can build a budget without asking anybody. Catering delivery is arranged by phone or email; delivery outside Virginia is not possible under cottage food law.

Talking to a person about it

The enquiry form for large orders is not connected yet, so it is not on this page. Call or email instead — it reaches the person who does the baking, and for an event that is the conversation you want anyway.

If you are new to these, what is a medialuna explains what you would be serving, and the caja mixta is the box to try first.
